Cost of ingredients
« on: May 06, 2015, 12:06:43 am »
I bought quinoa for the first time today. A 227gm bag cost me US$7:00, so that's about AUD$8:40. Does it cost this much in Australia?

It's interesting the price differences between here and Aus. During summer, for example, blueberries can be as low as $5 to $6 for a kilo and asparagus would be $2 a bunch, but the bunches here are three to four times the size of bunches in Australia. Asian foods are expensive though as Asia is so far away.

I thought you would like to know the cost of Quinoa in the UK MEP.
I paid £2.35 ( roughly $3.57) for a 300g packet of a supermarket brand here.

Thanks CC. That's good to know. I bought mine from Target so must try to find a cheaper supplier I think.

I haven't bought quinoa for a while but I think it is more CC's price here.

Quinoa, varies greatly in Australia depending on where you buy it. Cosco very cheap, I think was $20 for 2 ks.  Health food shop $10 for 300g.
I can't get over how expensive Asparagus is here.  We grow it in Victoria but the imported is cheaper.

Health food shop prices are comparable with what is charged here by Target then. I'm not a member of Costco but my neighbor is so I might ask if she can buy some for me next time she goes. I love asparagus and can't believe the prices in Aus (Perth) for those either. I gorged myself on asparagus, mangoes and blueberries when we first arrived here.

MEP, I purchased lots of organic healthy dried fruits,  berries and seeds along with coconut oil, chia seeds and a few other health food items at Costco last week and they were significantly cheaper than anywhere else I could purchase the same ingredients for.

The price of quinoa does vary. I'm so surprised at the price of cauliflower (considering it is in season) $6.00 for a cauli???

Ow no Woolies within 300 km here. I just don't buy them as they were almost $7 when we left a week ago. The last one I bought some time ago was $5 and I spent ages getting all the green caterpillars off it.

I heard something on the news about cauliflowers being up in price because of demand. Lots more people making Cauli rice etc , especially thosefollowing a Paleo diet.
