Beeswax sunscreen!
« on: January 31, 2014, 12:15:28 am »
Hey all I wanted share with you this recipe! Easy to do, very easy! I put this tuff on me when I am in the sun. It helps me heal and I do not suffer burning from the sun.

What you need

BASE:
Beeswax

OILS:
Coconut
Hemp
lemon
almond
sunflower
castor
Essential oils and any other oils you fancy.

So first up choose your storage options. I use a plastic tub or a glass jar works.

So the base is beeswax and coconut oil. I use 3 part bees wx and 2 part coconut oil, chuck those two into the storage jar. Get your mix out and start uo steaming, veroma temp. Put the Veroma on top and put your jar into the steam.

Put the lid on and steam until the beeswax has completely melted. From now on -----BE CAREFUL!!!!------
Do not spill this on your skin, it will stick and burn you. If this happens put your hand under cold/ freezing water and treat the burn with coconut oil/ hemp oil to heal.

Once the two substance are liquid add 20 grams of the Castor, almond, sunflower and any oher oils you deam worthy.

I had drops of essential oils. Lemon, Lavender, Rosemary and others. I try to get the liquid all the way to the top of the jat. Now is the time to start stirring, 20 minutes straight. Do not stop. The wax will solidify and you need to combine the wax and oils even.

Take the jar out and sit it on the bench.

The liquid starts out hot and runny and soon gets thick, keep stirring. If you wanna speed the process fill your sink with cold water and put  the jar in the water. The cold water helps the wax solidify.

Keep stirring and folding with a disposable spoon.

It will thicken and all the ingredients combine.

Master this process, today for the first time I was able to mix the ingredients into a cream. A waxy cream.
Now it has finished solidifying and I can take it with me, rub it on my skin instead of sun screen!

I am done with using chemical to protect myself!
Anyquestions, hit me up!

Is it sticky at all?  I hate sticky sunscreen.
May all dairy items in your fridge be of questionable vintage.

Hello it is all about what you put in it. The first time I made it yes it was sticky.
I put honey in it.

The beeswax is not sticky, it is like hair wax.

I ditched the honey. Now it is well waxy with the oil.
So it is creamy and it sticks to you but does not stick you to everything else.
Now the idea of calling it sun screen.

It is not a chemical repellent, not like spf 30+

How ever what my theory is. This will nourish you skin. It will enable your body to fight the harsh sun and not hide you.

Fight not run.

The first time I wore it I did not get burnt but my back did cause I could not cover it.
In time you adapt and the sun does not hurt you the same.

Hope that makes sense.

Im not an aromatherapist but would like to ask do you know about citrus oils being photosensitive? I would be worried about using them in sunscreen. Does anyone know anything about this? :)

One time I was in the sun way to long.
I got burned bad and there was no real food anywhere but lime and lemons.
I refused sunscreen, I will burn over that any day!
I used the juice from the lemon and lime to relieve the burn, I noticed little difference.
I know lemon and limes have are medicinal. Thats why I used it I would not of other wise.

As far as the scientific side of it, sorry I do not study science.

 Phototoxic Essential Oils

    angelica root
bergamot (unless it's specified as "bergaptene-free")
    cassia
    cumin
    ginger
    lemon
lime (just the cold expressed oil, not the steam distilled)
    lovage
    mandarin (possibly)
orange (unless it's a "folded" orange - luckily, most are)

I hope this helps you Nerida.
My Thermomix, Hot Mix Pro, Kitchen Aid, Pizza oven, Nu Wave 5 in 1, Dream pot all brings love, laughter, happiness, and great food  to my kitchen.
