Choc Orange Icecream Pie
« on: January 01, 2013, 06:29:07 am »
Choc Orange Icecream Pie:
Serves at least 12
Ingredients:
3/4 cup orange juice
1/3 cup caster sugar
1/4 cup hazelnut spread
1/2 x 250 g pack sponge fingers
Vanilla icecream
165g pack maltesers
Extra 1/4 cup hazelnut spread

Preparation:
Begin making the vanilla icecream  and set it churning in the icecream machine, or put it in the freezer.
Make the caster sugar according to the EDC.
Grease a 24cm round spring form tin and line the base.
Place orange juice, and sugar in bowl. Speed 3 at 100 degrees until the sugar is dissolved. Add hazelnut spread and stir speed 3 until it is all mixed together.
Place sponge fingers over the pan, pour the orange syrup over, turning sponge fingers. Leave until almost all the syrup is soaked up.
Mix softish icecream with the maltesers, I added in the last couple of minutes of churning.
Spread the icecream over the sponge fingers. Level top.
Drop extra bits of hazelnut spread over and swirl with a skewer. If you have churned your icecream you will need to do this quickly so it doesn't melt.
Cover and freeze.
When ready to serve decorate with maltesers and raspberries.
You will see from the photo that I didn't.

Tips/Hints:
I cut this from a magazine many years ago. It is lovely and lasts for ages in the freezer.

ES - I made this as a birthday cake for a friend. It is much too hot to bake. I used fruchocs instead of maltesers, and it was delicious. Thanks for the recipe.

JD - I have just taken this out of the spring form tin to take this photo before it set too solidly (and have a piece at the same time) but it needs a couple more hours in the freezer.  As you can see Cookie, some of my maltesers and sponge fingers floated to the top.  I can understand why ES's didn't - fruchocs are so much heavier than maltesers but why did my sponge fingers also float  Huh?  Not that it will make any difference, the piece I had was lovely.

cookie1 - Were they really soaked with the orange syrup Judy?  I have never had that happen. I leave mine for quite some time and turn the bits of sponge finger over in the syrup.

JD - Probably not long enough Cookie and I don't think I churned the ice-cream long enough either.  If it was thicker it might have been heavy enough to hold the biscuits etc down.  Just impatient and always in a hurry to get things made  Roll Eyes  Mind you, it doesn't really matter, it is lovely.

That looks and sounds really nice Cookie. I have all of those ingredients on hand but no room in the freezer so it's on the list for my next batch of ice-cream once I finish the 2 lots I have already  :-)) I don't think anyone will be eating the Maltesers DH received amongst his Christmas presents anytime soon.

OMG Yum! This looks like a great one to always have on hand in the freezer for unexpected guests or when you just can't be bothered :) And ifI'm feeling super lazy, I might even just buy the ice cream  ;)

The probelm is that the 'real' stuff doesn't last in my freezer because I eat it all up very quickly. The bought stuff just sits there so it's safer for me!

I could live on ice-cream, especially in summer and I eat the whole tub on my own as DH always declines my kind offer to share with him  ;D
