Title: Helene's Mock Rice is a real winner
Post by: gertbysea on January 08, 2012, 02:35:54 am
Well Helene has done it again. This is a great idea and recipe. I have already done it as a side dish, mock fried rice and even just steamed it slightly. Fantastic, quick, easy and a way to get kids to eat more vegetables. No carbs either.

If anyone has read Jane Kennedy's fantastic recipe books, which in my estimation, everyone should have in their kitchen, the cauliflower rice recipe is a complete winner in my house.  Even my carbohydrate overloaded 5 yo daughter who is convinced that everything either has to be rice, bread or pasta hasn't been able to detect the cauliflower factor in my 'rice'.  I am so glad someone has finally worked out how to do it with the Thermomix as I haven't been smart enough to do the Varoma steaming part although I do chop up the florets in the bowl all the time as it comes up with a perfect texture to the cauliflower that the kids like and also looks indistinguishable from rice. Well done!

Does it have a really raw taste Merlin, I think I would have to steam it.

No Judydawn, I neglected to say that I steam the cauliflower florets in  the microwave for 5 minutes as per the recipe in Jane Kennedy's book and then use the TM to break it up, I just haven't bothered to use the Varoma to do the steaming, but now that I know how, I think I will prefer to use the forum recipe in future, so the cauliflower certainly is not raw.

I read the recipe and really didn't fancy it.  But now will have to try it.  Will let you know how I go.

I'm trying this tonight to go with sweet and sour chicken. I'm following weight watchers and rice is so very high in points.  :-))

Love this.  Have used it 3 times,  but always under a very tasty sauce.  It was particually nice under the Low fat Satay sauce.(posted).  I am going to experiment with it as a Pilaf. Nik, I think it would be very good with Sweet and Sour sauce.  I am also on a diet and find this a good substitute for rice.  I steam it,  and it also reheats well in Microwave.  Thank you Helene, you really are wonderful.

It was lovely with my sweet and sour sauce.  I kept it to myself as I wouldn't have got it past the others ...  I've nothing against rice, per se except you don't get much for your points and I'd rather have another one of my "five a day" instead.  I've kept some back to go on a salad tomorrow - yum

Am off now to find the low fat satay sauce :)

Nik,  go to my blog and look at the 2 recipes for fish which I poach in the Varoma.  You can leave the oil out of the tomato based one.  S orth I can't do a link for you.   Both recipes are also on the Forum.

Thanks to you achookwoman -- glad to know people are using this concept and like me... feeling virtuous healthy because of it. :D !

I love reading about all your saucy ideas ;) because I love any excuse for a sauce and of course Thermomix is soooo helpful for all that.
