Title: Adding Photos to Posts
Post by: Thermomixer on September 26, 2008, 08:58:25 am
There are 2 ways (that I know of) to post images on this forum.

The first - which is easy if you already have an account such as flickr or Photobucket, or have your own blog.

Once they are in these sites you can usually right click on the photo and find properties - copy the address (URL:)  and then, in the body of the message you can click "Insert Image" (second icon in middle row) when you are at the spot you wish to place the photo, position the cursor between the [ img ]    [ /img ] characters and hit paste.  The URL should appear between the [ img ]    [ /img ] boxes. Then check with Preview.  If you like it you can then Post.

The second method - which is easier - now that I have told baf65 to do the above - click on  "Additional Options... " below the box you are writing your message in and "Attach" comes up as an option - there is a box to enter the address on your computer or internet where the photo is to be found (& of course the "Browse" facility - to make life even easier).

This way allows you to attach photos without flickr/Photobucket etc accounts and is much simpler !!!!!  :-[

Thanks Termomixer - Can you also tell me how to reduce the file size of a photo please?  I'm having trouble posting as my photos are too big >:(

Depends on the program you use for the photos, but if you open them in Paint or similar there are options to reduce the size of photos in the Image under Stretch/Skew -you can reduce to 50/40/30/20 % or whatever suits.

Let us know which program you are using.

You can set up a Picassa, Photobucket account -free and then use the URLs to post??

I L B, all I do is, right click on the photo, then find edit, then up comes the photo and down the left side there is a bit which lets you change its size, I choose small, and then save changes. It then works! My DD showed me how, won't be long before your DD will be teaching you too!

Thanks for bumping I love Bi,by - I couldn't find this anywhere last night

Is there anyway we can make this a sticky thread so it stays at the top?
Title: Re: Adding Photos to Posts

ralo, I'm not sure what the notify button at the bottom does, but just clicked it and hopefully that helps.
When I get around to cooking something else that requires a photo I'll look this up again, until then it's just going to sit here... LOL!!

as far as i can tell this thread has always been a sticky!

oh and i think the notify button will probably just tell you when the thread gets a new reply ;)

For months I had a piece of paper that I had printed off about how to download pics on to this website. It looked very difficult and off putting, especially mentioning stuff about Photobucket.

For dummies like me - ignore Photobucket.

Download your pics from the camera into a file eg. My Pictures
Create another file where you can put all your food photo's eg. Thermomix
When you download your photo's pop them in this file, and you can rename those pics that you want to upload eg. Date Slice
When it comes to downloading, do what you would normally do in this text section here, and then you will see directly under this text box --- Additional Options, click on this. Click on the Browse button where you have the Attach, and by clicking on your files where you have saved the pic (eg. My Pictures, Thermomix, Date Slice) until your desired file name appears.
Then voila! press Post.

Don't wait for someone to help you, just try and do it yourself because it really is easy  ;D

I can't get this method to work :( Help!
I've followed the steps exactly as described above, but all I get is a wierd little icon instead of my picture when I save the post. I tried viewing it in Internet Explorer (the weird little icon is in Google Chrome) but there's still something wrong. It shows up as a box with a big red cross in it. As far as I can tell, there's nothing wrong with my Flickr account.

I use photobucket. I upload the photos to there, save and name them and then put the scroll over the photo and a drop down menu comes up. Move down it until the bottom line and right click to copy that. Then return to the forum and go to where you want the photo and right click and paste. I guess this is about as clear as mud. :-)) :-))

I've worked it out! Well, not me exactly... I had to ask someone who could decipher the SMF code. Turns out I was trying to insert the link to the whole webpage of the photo on flickr rather than the link to the actual image itself. I edited the post so you should now be able to see a pretty photo of yummy  yoyo biscuits (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=1877.msg70291#msg70291).

Here's Chelsea's explanation of how to reduce the size of your photos.

"I open the folder where the photo is currently saved (can even be your camera folder).
I right click on the photo and a menu appears.
I click on the "open with" option.
I then click on the "paint" option and it will open in the paint program (don't worry if it is huge).
I then click on the "image" menu at the top.
I click on the stretch and skew option in the image menu.
In stretch and skew I change the stretch settings to 25% and 25% (and leave the other settings).
I then click on the file menu and click on the "save as" option.
I type a new name for my smaller sized photo.
I find the folder where I want to save my resized photo in the drop down menu (I use "my pictures" folder)
I click on save and then close the paint program.
The smaller sized photo will be saved in the folder I selected and will open in almost every application (not just paint).

It sounds complicated but that's just because I have put in all of the steps (I hope). Hope this helps. "

The only issue with attaching photos to a post is remembering to first resize the image down to less than <256k in size. The other is that you can't attach via the iPad :(

If there is one thing I'd like Apple to solve for the next iOS release (i.e iOS 6) it would be to be able to upload photo's from the iPad/iPhone photo library to a forum via Safari. (with an optional resize step in between like you can do with email)

oh my, it works, but it is huge - sorry. I was skimming a few threads on how to add photos and I remember seeing somewhere that I could add the URL from photos that are in our blogs. I thought I'd try it out, but now I need to find out how to change the size.

I guess I could go back and read these threads more carefully, but if anyone has any quick tips I'd really appreciate them.

Ok, so I'm trying to work out how to add photos and have followed the instructions above but I've got a problem.

I click on the Additional Options button but in the Attach section the Choose File button is greyed out and I can't select it.  I'm using Safari browser on my iPad if that makes any difference.

I really want to post a recipe and it would be great if I could work out how to add a picture

Btw for anyone with an iPad or iPhone, you can now upload directly to this forum (and others), as long as you are running iOS 6.

The only downside if your photo is too big for the forum, is you may need to choose the photo in the photo app first, email it to yourself (choosing a smaller size), swap to email to save photo to photo roll and then upload photo. (Assuming you don't have a photo editing program to shrink it yourself)

Works a treat ...

Thankyou, she is a sweetie, she goes everywhere with us except to the shops and when we go out for meals.

I am not going to tell her she is a dog, because I don't think she would agree.

She's a cavoodle by the way, beautiful nature, doesn't shed but can be a little naughty and bark at people.
