For all you tomato sauce lovers, make your own tomato sauce at home, that tastes just like the one Heinz one. I have tried hard with other sauces, but DH is addicted to the bottled stuff.. so I searched out a recipe that tastes exactly the same and I have adapted for other addicts. There could probably be healthier variations to this recipe, but have left as is for the hard core lovers of the bottle stuff :o
Ingredients:
170 gr Tomato Paste
1/3 cup honey
1/2 cup white vinegar
1/4 water
4 TBLsp sugar
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp onion powder
1/8 tsp garlic powder
Method:
Place all ingredients in the thermomix and blend on speed 4 for 20 secs.
Cook on 100 degrees for 10 mins, speed 1
Reduce temperature to 80 degrees and cook another 10 mins, speed 1
Leave to cool in thermomix with lid on
When cool, pour into jars/containers and refridgerate.
Makes about 1.5 cups.
-
Sounds good, how much would this make?
-
Dede... it makes about 1 & 1/2 cups. Will update recipe ;)
-
My kids love their tomato sauce, would be great to make it myself without all the preservatives. :)
They don't like my homemade tomato sauce and relish so this could be the way to go. Thanks for that.
-
THis would be great and have to try it when we run out.
How long would it keep for do you think?
-
I just brought a 4 liter bottle of sauce. But once that's close to finished I will give this a try.
Should last ok with vinegar in it. Probably a few weeks (3-6) at a guess.
-
i am try this today, would make it now but DH is sleep and the noise would wake him
i have made tomato sauce b4 ,but frank real didnt like it, i hope he likes this one
thanks for posting squirrel

Good luck Fundj. My DH was impressed, but it was like presenting a taste test to a world food critic. LOL ;)
-
i hope so 2 squirrel
-
Looks good fundj, how long did it take to cool in the tm? Could I put it in the thermoserver to cool, so I can use the tm, oh I wish I had two bowls sometimes ;D
-
That looks great fundj, and the verdict?
-
not sure dede taste test maybe tonight
thermo18 i did not time it sorry, but i did weigh the honey 140g ;D
-
thermo18.... u can cool it in the thermoserver.. that would be OK. just keep the lid on it.
-
Thanks squirrel, making this afternoon, let's hope it gets the thumbs up from my fussy lot ;D
-
Any reviews yet?
-
I have made a few more test batches in consultation with the world expert tomato sauce taste tester (DH). I have adjusted the recipe slightly (adjustments made in original). I have reduced the amount of honey and increased the sugar slightly.
He was rapped with the last batch so I may have conquered the mountain and made it to the summit LOL ;)
-
We are happy when we get to the summit squirrel - especially if we have tried a recipe several times to get it just right. Good for you for persevering until DH gave it the thumbs up.
-
still have not done a blind test on DH and the kids............. i didn't set the table for dinner :-))
-
Couldn't you put it in the old bottle fundj and see if anybody notices?
-
already have but only 1/2, still same of the bought in it ;)

How would you go when starting with fresh tomatoes instead of tomato paste? I can not have processed tomatoes in my diet due to allergy
-
Stef, see the link for MJ's tomato passata (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=2193.0) - read all the postings and you will come across one which was inadvertently turned into tomato paste.

i sometimes make my tomato paste on the stove top or in the TM
-
Who read my mind????? Will be trying this one asap thanks for posting ;D
-
I'm intrigued uni, did you have that pic on hand or did you go and make some to take a pic?
-
;D thats funny GP
no i didnt make it today ;D
-
i tried another ketchup recipe from the forum here, but the cinnamon taste is just a big too much.
i dried some unions a while ago and can cook down some tomatoes to make tomato paste any time i can find the time..
so i definitely will try this.. just one other question.. why let it cool in the bowl with the lid on? i would expect you want to thicken it a little by removing the lid ..
-
This sounds like something my son would appreciate, only my supermarket doesn't sell Garlic or Onion Powder :-\
Will have to look next time I'm in the 'big city' .. Thank-You for sharing though!
-
Will need to try as my family isnt keen on other ketchup recipes either......
-
Trying this tomorrow with super ripe small tomatoes instead of tomatopaste.. I guess the coooking down will take alot longer though.. Any ideas how many i will need compared to the paste and how long i may varoma them?
-
Awaiting results with interest...... You do the testing while I am away from Thermy for a week, perfect.
Plus have found a supply of reasonable priced tomatoes, as not growing enough to cook with this year.
Keep up the good work.....

Lol that is not advice! But i will have to try it anyway... I will start with my original recipe using frsh tomatoes (about 1.5 kilo) and see how much sweet and vinegar i normally use and adopt it from there.. Will post the result if any good in a new post
I need yo go from frsh since i am not allowed to eat industrial canned food

Here it is, my ketchup based on fresh tomatoes, sunriped!
I added some spices, like allspice, dried ginger, mustard flour and cayenne.. Though for me a bit on the sweet side i kept the sugar.. Maybe will do with a bit less next time!
I do reduce more then the original recipe, since the tomatoes are fesh.. I start with a 3 sec, speed 4 blitz so all ingredients fit in the bowl, then 40 minutes varoma speed 2.... Then blitz speed 10 for 90 seconds to make sure the texture is ok.. And then go back to varoma (always with basket) for 15 to 30 minutes to get the right thickness(http://img.tapatalk.com/5ee25f6e-dfe2-5192.jpg)
Btw this is the result of 3 batches... Tnx for the recipe!
-
Thanks so much.
Bumping for newbies and off to get ingredients for my hampers.
-
Thanks for the bump. Can't wait to try this. Have 2 DS's that drown everything in Tom sauce.
-
Time for a bump :)
