Apple juice

Might be a silly question, but I am wondering how I go about making apple juice? The juices in the grocery section of the supermarket all have added stuff, and the one juice we started buying (Wild about fruit) has run out at our shops and they're ultra slow in getting anymore in!! We can only eat certain apples - ie: not granny smiths usually used for juicing - so I thought it'd just be easier to make our own rather than putting up with plain water on such a hot day.

So, we have apples! What do I do with them? :)

I googled to see if there were any ideas Purplehat and found one person who had tried it successfully but because it was a lot of work she says she won't be doing it again.  Tasted good though she said.

12 applies, washed and peeled. Chop into small pieces (could use the TMX for this but don't over chop).  Pour over them, 3 litres boiling water with 3 teaspoons cream of tartar mixed in with it.  Leave it for 24 hours then strain the juice through a fine sieve or chux.  Measure out 8 cups juice and add 2 cups sugar and cook until sugar has dissolved.

Someone may have tried it themselves and can give you more information but this is a starter.

I would just peel, quarter and core the apples, half fill bowl, add another quarter bowl of ice, crush on speed 9 until mushed (and even speed 10 for a few seconds), then add some water/soda water and mix in to make it the right consistency... you could add some apple juice concentrate to sweeten if you like it sweeter.  (Or agave syrup)  :)

Thanks!! I might just try the apples and water. We don't need to make it sweet - apples are sweet enough for us. :)

Ice sounds like a good idea, too.. need to get some ice cube trays. The ones with lids so they can stack in the chest freezer easier.

I find speed 10 for a minute after the water is added really finishes our juices off nicely - very smooth.  :)

We chopped the apples at about speed 6-7 for around 30 seconds, then added the water and got to speed 9 or so for about 45 seconds.. The juice tastes ok, but a bit sharp on the throat on the way down.  :o I think a bit longer at a higher speed, like Chelsea suggested. I'll be honest, I havn't gone to speed 10 yet!! I'm kinda nervous. lol Either that or maybe I should have peeled the apples.  ;)

Don't be scared to go 'full speed' - the machine won't break!!!  If by any chance it's feeling overloaded, it will stop so that the motor won't be damaged and you'll see an error message.  But that won't happen with quartered apples, peeled or unpeeled, so just do it!!  (With ice too!  It helps grind it smoother.)

.... and just empty the ice cubes into bags or plastic trays to hold in the freezer - saves room.

If you are using a lot of apples it might be an idea to get a good apple peeler.

I use Apple Master Apple Peeler but there are several similar brands that can do the same. They peel the apples, core them and leave them in slices too. And all very fast. I can peel, core and cut 20 apples in less then 6 minutes.

It takes me longer than 6 minutes to work out how to use mine bluesed  :P :P  Don't need to use it very often and each time is like the first time.  DH comes in handy at times like this  ;)
