Is it possible to make a decent tasting mayonnaise type dressing without eggs?
My son and family will be visiting this week and before my dear daughter in law became a vegan she loved my Waldorf and potato salads. :-\

Eggless or egg free mayonnaise recipes are easily googled G... my youngest has an egg allergy and I have used a silken tofu to make a mayonnaise for him like this one:
Tofu Mayonnaise
Ingredients
* 1 c silken tofu
* 1 small clove garlic, minced
* 1 t good mustard
* 2 t cider vinegar
* ¼-½ t salt
* ¼ c olive oil
Directions: Blend the everything but the oil for a few seconds.
Without turning off the blender or food processor, slowly pour in the remaining oil.
As soon as it is mixed in, turn off the blender and transfer to a container.
There are also recipes like this one that use soy milk: http://glutenfreeday.com/?p=65 (http://glutenfreeday.com/?p=65)

There's an egg-free mayo - but it does have milk - maybe substitute rice or soy milk ? http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=287.0 (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=287.0)

Hi Gretchen,
this recipe is from: www.virusculinarius.de

vegan Soyanaise without egg
Ingredients:
170 grams of neutral oil
170 grams of soy milk or soy-/ricemilk
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon mustard
1 pinch pepper
Preparation:
Weigh oil in a cup and set aside
Add other ingredients and mix 30 Sec / Speed 6
Pour slowly the oil - machine running - through measuring cup for 60 seconds /speed 8. See if Soyanaise has the right consistency, or mix a few seconds more.
This Soyanaise is unbelievable - egg-and dairy-free - tastes almost like regular mayonnaise - no funny soy taste and much lower in fat! Wonderful as a dip or spread with cucumber, peppers, etc. Convince yourself!

Thank you one and all. I think i will try the one with soy/rice milk first.
I have just made some chocolate ice cream with silken tofu and it was truly disgustng but pehaps my dear daughter in law will love it. I am over tofu for the moment. Just can't get the taste out of my mouth. Yuk!
Thanks Thermomixer. I did look but didn't go back far enough . I will make that one as well.
You guys are amazing.

Gretchen, can't wait to read how your D-I-L likes your adapted cooking methods just for her. I'm sure you are going to do a great job feeding her. Have a great time with them both. Where are they coming from?

I think if you add a garlic clove to the German recipe then it is probably a better version of the no egg one that I linked.

Judy they are driving up from Murwillumbah. and thank you Thermomixer for the garlic advice.I made it with garlic and it is good.They generally don't eat garlic or onions but I draw the line at that one. Something to do with the Hare Krishna/Hindu something or other. They also use a lot of asfedita which smells like halitosis and I refuse to have in the house. It WILL be fun. ;D They will fall in love with the Thermomix I am sure but I can off load my new and not used blender on them.
They will eat anything I cook even if they don't particularly like it as they trust me to follow their requirements. I am not too sure about the chocolate tofu ice cream. Truly one of the most disgusting things I have ever made. On to the lentil pie today.
Cheers,
Gretchen
