Title: Lemon Cleaning Concentrate from the UK Thermomix site
Post by: judydawn on March 24, 2011, 01:29:44 am
This (http://www.ukthermomix.com/recshow.php?rec_id=87) recipe is a great way to use up excess lemons, is cheap to make and would make great gifts.  Unlike the other lemon cleaner  (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=940.0) which uses coarse salt which causes damage to the bowl, this recipe is more gentle on it and I have only heard of 1 incidence of damage.  However, it has been requested that a warning be put on this recipe to that affect and it's up to you as to whether you make it or not. Personally I have had no problems whatsoever with this recipe and make sure I clean the bowl immediately after the mixture has been cooked and removed from the bowl.

400 - 500g lemons (approx 4 large, cut into 3cm chunks)
300g salt - use fine cooking salt, not rock or sea salt flakes as they could damage your bowl.
300g water
100g vinegar

Place the lemon chunks including skin and pips in the TM bowl.  Chop 30 sec/speed 10.
Scrape down the bowl with a spatula then add the salt and water. Cook 5 mins/100oC/speed 4.
Add the vinegar.  Cook again 5 mins/100oC/speed 4.
Scrape down the bowl with the spatula. Blend 1 min/speed 10 - it will resemble lemon curd in appearance.
Do not leave the mixture in the TM bowl, once cooked pour into a jar or a heatproof plastic container. Allow cleaning concentrate to cool before covering with a vinegar-proof lid (either plastic or a metal one with an inside coating of plastic).
Straight away add enough water to your TM bowl to cover the blades and self-clean for 20 sec/speed 8 then rinse and dry.
Note - your bowl will be refreshed and shinier after making this recipe!
Mark the container clearly as to it's contents - this recipe is not for human consumption.

Check out the various uses on the above link.

Looks great and thanks so much for posting JD.  I've been on the lookout for something I can make and use that doesn't involve any harsh chemical nasties.  Very versatile too by the looks.

*sigh* oh to have a lemon tree!  (it is in my dreams, and one day it will come true)...

I had to really scrounge my neighbour's overhanging lemon tree this morning o2k - I've used most of them for lemonade during the hot weather.  Maybe I could reach the higher branches if I get up the ladder....... I'd love to make more batches and give to everyone. Love the idea of a tablespoon in the washing machine and who doesn't like the smell of lemons in their house.

Without doubt, lemon is my favourite flavour/scent for just about anything!

And yes, brilliant gift idea...

Which gives me an idea...one of my besties just had a baby, what a perfect thing to add to my gift(s) for her.  Might just have to go out and buy me some lemons...

Only just made it CP, cleaned the bathroom basin, stainless steel kitchen sink and wiped down the laminex topped cupboards.  Worked fine for me and I love the smell. I have a glass topped stove so don't know how it would go on there, I'll probably stick with my usual mix of water, dishwashing detergent and a dash of cloudy ammonia for that (my window cleaner uses that mix so I pinched the idea off him).

Judydawn this recipe is very similar to the dishwashing one (that wrecked my bowl!!)  Is it very abrasive?  When making this I would probably get it out of the TM as soon as it is done to prevent it from etching the bottom of the TM jug.  ??? ???
Title: Re: Lemon Cleaning Concentrate from the UK Thermomix site
Post by: judydawn on March 24, 2011, 06:49:51 am
It is a little bit like that one earth mumma but I didn't use rock salt, just ordinary cooking salt.  It isn't all that abrasive.  I had completely forgotten about that other one and haven't made it since this  (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=940.0) warning was given , thanks for reminding me.  I might email H.O. and ask for their advice before making another batch.
I have emailed H.O. so will get back to you when I receive an answer.

sounds interesting but think I will wait to hear back from what others thought of it once used..the info on the uK website is putting me off ie may need to rinse straight away and redo if marks..sounds like more work than its worth but like the handwash idea and the washing boost as well...look forward to hearing back from you JD re what HO says re affecting the bowl etc !

Would you believe I have only just come off the phone to a lovely young lass called Laura who contacted me from Mawson Lakes in Adelaide's northern suburbs.  H.O. had put her onto me as I had written to them about 4 weeks ago (!) telling them I didn't have a consultant and asking to be put in touch with someone close. She was only handed this request plus the one about the lemon/salt concentrate just recently.

So, apart from the good news that I now have a consultant who is going to put me on her list for emails about upcoming events and specials the other news is that H.O. sees no reason why this recipe from the UK should harm our machines.  I would definitely only use cooking salt though, not rock or sea salt flakes.

Thanks for letting us know JD. We can all breath a sigh of relief now - phew!! It looked really good but I was concerned about some of the comments. I'll just need to remember to use only cooking salt. Is there any way to amend the original recipe to say so in case someone reads the recipe without all the posts? BTW glad to hear that you have a new consultant.

If you only have rock salt, then grind it down to cooking salt before starting the recipe  ;) I know people have had concerns about this too after the other post but we are encouraged to do this as a consultant and we concluded that it was the rock salt, lemon and cooking etc that did the damage.

Saves another container in the pantry!!  ;) :D

Thanks for letting us know JD - might give this a whirl I think as I was pretty pleased with the dishwasher cleaner as a cleaner after my dishwasher decided that it didn't like it!

Made this.  DH is currently cleaning the oven with it.  I put some in the sink with dishes/dishwashing liquid and definitely notice the sparkle.

Going to run it through the washing machine on empty cycle as a bit of a clean out and then test it out when I do towels next.

Just want to clarify that this recipe is not like the dishwashing liquid with the FATAL TMX WARNING.  Is it the adding of the rinse aid that causes trouble, the rock salt or the combination of both?  As messages from Dishwashing liquid say trouble is due to acidity?.  I have read the messages from the dishwashing liquid only after making this cleaner (which by the way I love, smells great and no damage to my machine), but am confused to the difference between them.  Could someone please clear it up for me (after all this cleaner is from the UK thermo site), and are there any new developments with the dishwasher liquid, and could we use this cleaner in our dishwashers?.  Hope this all makes sense ???

Hi Judy, is this anything like Gumption?  Does it clean bathrooms?  Does it have a longish self-life?  I haven't done much cleaning since I got the TMX, but had a go at the bathroom this morning and I'm nearly out of cleaner. I want to make everything!
Title: Re: Lemon Cleaning Concentrate from the UK Thermomix site
Post by: judydawn on August 29, 2011, 12:37:14 am
Guess you could say it was a similar product, although totally different. I haven't actually used it to clean the TM bowl (I go straight for the Gumption for that) but I have used it for cleaning the bathroom basin etc and the stainless steel sink and keep a jar in the laundry to add a blob to the washing machine. It lasts for as long as it would take for you to use it up. I will try it on the bowl next time something sticks and see if it works as well as Gumption, just never thought to do so in the past.

do you think it would work with limes instead of lemons? I have a tree full and can only make so much marmalade!
Title: Re: Lemon Cleaning Concentrate from the UK Thermomix site
Post by: judydawn on August 29, 2011, 01:20:02 pm
Vivaroo, I used the paste today to clean the bowl after making cheese sauce and it gave the same result as Gumption - paste and finger nail did the trick which is what I do when I use Gumption.

Bonsai, if you have excess limes there is no harm in trying - can't see that it would be much different to lemons.

I spilt some when tipping it into the jar, so rubbed it onto a cloth and tested it on the very baked on grime inside my oven door....IT CAME OFF!! I love this stuff now  ;D ;D

Just have to find some appropriate containers.

Wondering since its been a while since a lot of people have been using it - whats the overall consensis on the way it cleans? Would you make it again? I was thinking of making a batch and putting in a squeezy sauce bottle - is this a good container for the consistency?
Title: Re: Lemon Cleaning Concentrate from the UK Thermomix site
Post by: judydawn on October 22, 2011, 10:53:46 am
I only make it when I have lots of spare lemons CP and do still use my Gumption for troublesome spots but as an all rounder cleaner, it is good and still smells nice after months (if not used up by then).  I tested it in a squeeze bottle, this one is from a cheap jack store and is not so flexible as those you buy your tomato sauce in - they would be better if you have any of them lying around.

I wasn't impressed. It was too 'oily'. I much prefer bi-carb soda. Ended up chucking it. I'd rather zest and juice the lemons and freeze it.

Nazar, there seems to be conflicting information on whether green lemons will ripen once picked but have a read of this (http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/citrus/msg1019385912768.html).  I'm sure green lemons would be quite OK for making this cleaning concentrate but not for drinking maybe. It isn't going to cost you anything to experiment though.

I've never added any oil to mine nazar, use it purely for cleaning, adding to the washing machine and lately have been putting a good squirt in the dishwasher (not in one of the containers but over the plates etc). I don't use a rinse aid.

Hi Nazar,
I've currently got a handwash (oil added) that I put into an old soap pump bottle.  Mine separates as well but if you give it a real hard shake before using they come back together again, and easily pump through.  It is quite oily as a hand wash, but great for getting rid of smelly hands.  Use this hand wash in summer though as in winter (when I first used mine) the lemon cleaner sets harder and clogs up the pump.

I think this cleaner is better used as is, for kitchens and bathrooms.  So for those curious about whether to make this or not give it a go.  I love the fresh smell it leaves, and its great for cleaning, especially for the kids toilet (two little boys can make a huge mess)

Hi judy
I had seen this recipe in Journal of a French Foodie
I've just noticed that you also made this.

I made it a couple of weeks ago.
It smells nice
I am using it to wash the dishes mostly.
I diluite the concentrate with my usual liquid detergent and a little hot water in a bowl and then wet my sponge with it
Before that, I was adding a bit vinegar instead of this concentrate
I didn't see much difference between two.

You were saying that you used it also in washing machine. As an addition to your usual detergent right?
Have you also used some cloth softener and water softener?

Have you ever tried it in the dishwasher?

Title: Re: Lemon Cleaning Concentrate from the UK Thermomix site
Post by: judydawn on February 05, 2012, 08:53:47 am
Farfallina, I just tip about a 1/4 of a cup into the washing machine water along with my home made powder (not always, just when I feel like it).  I never use fabric softener, I fill the fabric softener container with vinegar  - have done so for many years and this washing machine is now going on 18 years old and I have never had to call a repairman out to it.

I do the same with the dishwasher, I have it in a plastic bottle and just squirt it over the top of the dishes in addition to the normal amount of dishwashing powder.  I don't use rinse aid in my dishwasher, again I use vinegar.

I've made jars and jars of this stuff with the ugly lemons off Mum's tree that nobody wants to cook with, and I love it.  We used it to clean the oven, and while it still needed a bit of elbow grease at least I knew that if I missed rinsing a bit it wouldn't release a cloud of toxic fumes into whatever I cooked next.

It also did wonders getting the smell out of our thermos after a batch of yoghurt made with goat's milk.  It set beautifully, and probably tasted exactly as it was supposed to, but sadly that wasn't quite to my taste, and the smell lingered in the thermos until some lemon paste and a really thorough scrub.  I also throw a splodge in when I do a load of dishcloths, tea towels etc.  A lot of them are microfibre so I can't use high temperatures, but this stuff seems to help the detergent to cut through the grease and leave them really clean.

@judy, thank you for your quick reply as always.
I am using vinegar to clean my kettle. Here the water is so hard! I fill 3/4 of the kettle with water, I boil the water, I fill the remaining 1/4 with vinegar, leave it overnight (in the balcony cos it smells!) In the morning I throw vinegar-water. Boil water and throw it too. Rinse and its limescale-free
So you add vinegar in washing machine instead of fabric softener and in dishwasher instead of rinse aid...
What do you the about the strong smell of vinegar?

@Kingsvilletess, thank you for your feedback
Today I've been thinking just the same thing while I was trying this lemon concentrate to clean the oven! :)
When I use detergents, I always try to rinse it well and wash away all the chemical stuff. Rinse and wipe many times
Nevertheless I always smell some detergent when I start the oven for the first time after cleaning which makes me feel very uncomfortable!

There is no smell of vinegar farfallina, well not to me anyway.  Try it, you have nothing to lose and it is so much cheaper.

Ah, just remembered.  I buy generic white vinegar and dilute it by half.  I read somewhere if you tip half out(into another container) and top both up with water, it will be just as strong in a couple of days time.  You get 4 litres for the price of 2. This is what I use in both the washing machine and the dishwasher but not for cooking.

Now to make the cleaner, using the last of the fruit, seeds, & skins. No waste!!

Thanks JD. Great idea. I actually put two spoons in a spray bottle diluted with white vinegar. It makes a fantastic spray and wipe. So far it has spot cleaned walls, sprayed and left to do its magic on the shower walls, cleaned the job and splash backs in the kitchen and has been a great cleaner for our glass dining table (with two young boys what was I thinking?). How do you use it in the dishwasher? Do you use instead of detergent in the compartment?

Do you think this would work with limes? I have a glut of limes and struggling to use them.

According to this site (http://www.cluebert.com/unusual-uses/unusual-uses-of-lemons/), yes they will Wonder. Check out some of the uses for lemons.

Robyn, you could bottle and sell your cleaner at a market when you harvest your next lot.

Lemons were very cheap at the cash n carry today so I grabbed my chance.

Bit worried about my bowl please see chitchat post.

Made 3 batches, cleaned out and thoroughly washed each time.

Cleaner cooling now, will put lids on tomorrow.

Used some to get tea stains off inside of 2 mugs, worked a treat.

Miracle spray next on list to make but forgot to get spray bottle from garden centre sale, will go back for one.

Then the detergent If I am brave enough. Got sunlight, got fine washing soda, got vanish stain soap bar too. The borax I got is called Borax substitute - sodium sesquicaronate.  Not sure what difference is.

I recently bought flash bathroom cleaner, and as well as being expensive it almost gassed us. So am hoping these save money and are much better for us.

Does anyone still use bought cleaners some of the time? If so what and when.
Apologies for endless questions.

I am not sure about the dishwasher detergent as the DW is supplied with the house and I don't want to damage it but not using salt and rinsaid etc.

Want to make lemon curd next as have a lot of eggs.

I have heaps of lemon in the backyard, only needs 2 (already 520grams), I accidently put 120gr vinegar, I suppose it would be OK?  Still cooking away...

I actually used this the other day to clean (whizz) the TM bowl after making a meal instead of detergent and couldn't believe how good it looked.

It removes lime scale off draining board. Much nicer than lime scale stuff.

HI Ladies, having some TMX waves of inspiration tonight and looking at cleaning products.

how is this recipe different from the "FATAL dishwasher" recipe from an old thread? sorry for the dumb question... just don't want to destroy thermie!

is it that it doesn't contain rinse aid, or is it the fine vs coarse salt? something else?

thanks.

This is the warning about the other concentrate (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=940.0) written by Steve from HO at the time Strawberries.

Hello everyone.

I really feel I need to send out a word of warning about the Dishwasher Soap?

Someone really needs to tell people NOT to use this recipe, please don't shoot the messenger.
Firstly, you all should be aware that this recipe definitely isn’t endorsed by Thermomix. So any damage won't be covered under warranty.

I have seen first hand the damage that can be caused by this several time now, again just yesterday. I am not sure if it is just the ingredients, a variation in the quantities or if leaving it in the bowl for an extended period that is the cause of damage at random times. I do know I won't be testing it to find out either.

I am really surprised that people keep trying it even after reading previous posts in this thread about marks left in the bowl etc.

It obviously has a very high acidity and it really can cause serious damage. I must add I certainly wouldn’t put my machine at risk by trying it.

Cheers Steve

thanks

Obviously a combination of things but I'd say the coarse salt was the main offender with grains getting stuck under the blade and causing etching of the metal surface.  When I make this lemon cleaning concentrate from the UK, I empty it out of the bowl as soon as it's done and clean the bowl immediately.

I don't really know what to say.
My bowl was damaged.

I don't know if I will dare make again.
Maybe use an old pan, whizz lemons in  *:, then cook on stove in old pan and use stick blender at the end.

I find I use more miracle spray around the house than the lemon at the moment.

Oh no, DJ  :( !!  Which one did you make, this one or the FATAL one?  So, so sorry to hear that you have damaged your jug.

This one. I was very lucky though and got great customer service.
Uk  *: replaced the jug. I hadn't had the 2nd jug even a month.
I am very grateful, but very wary now.

thanks for that insight droverjess... i'm a bit wary too. sorry you stuffed yout TMX.

i like the 'use an old pan' thing though. i'd rather kill a pan i got at an op shop for $3 than a $2k machine!

Thanks,  I know it was awful and I used fine cooking salt too.
And washed it, and took it apart.

Still all's well. However don't know if uk TMX still promote cleaning recipe?

I've still got some of this and I use it up by putting some in my empty dishwasher every couple of weeks on a quick cycle as a clean through.  :)

I saw this and headed straight into the kitchen to make it.  While it was doing I carried on reading so didn't see the warning message until it was done.  No problems, it's fine, but I wonder if the mods might consider posting some sort of warning that would show at the start of the thread?
Just a thought.

I've just whipped up a batch of this and have had no issues with my bowl! It's nice and shiney! Also my house smells divine!

I'm wondering if it would work on my glass stove top to cut smudges and then wash off? I don't have a dishwasher so any other suggestions on how to use it would be appreciated!

This stuff also makes a pretty good herbicide.  We have a tree that's been removed from our yard, but still kept reshooting from the tiny bit of remaining stump.  Normal herbicides hadn't worked at all.  I hacked it right back, and brushed the concentrate on the raw ends.  It's never grown back.  Obviously the salt got it.
