Cleaning off food stuck on the base of the bowl (eg porridge)
« on: August 03, 2009, 12:50:09 pm »
The other day I finally noticed a tip in the Uk recipe book under the porridge recipe.  It says that if you've got food (eg burned, porridge, eggs) stuck on the bottom, just add some water as if going to do the self-clean, plus a bit of detergent (if it's well burnt - something I've never had - I'd add a tsp of bicarb as well), then heat it at 100 for 1-2 minutes.  I couldn't remember the speed they said (and I was too lazy to look it up) so I did it at speed 8 as usual for a self-clean.

I couldn't believe how well it worked!!!! I've used it quite a few times now, and it's worked excellently every time.  So thought I'd pas the tip on.
As my picture shows, I've suddenly become younger :-)  DD was of the opinion that her picture should be here, not mine!

Thanks for that Caroline!  Might have to give a whiz.. not that I've needed to yet.  :)

how much water do you use for the clean? last week i was told to only just cover the blades, but i'm sure the book says to fill half way

I always make sure the top ''thing a ma jig" of the blades is covered. I use reverse like Baf and occasionally a couple of blasts of turbo, it depends what I've been cooking. I'll try CAroline's idea for stuck on custards etc.

I also find that when I blitz my vegie scraps, eggshells etc at the end of the day for the compost heap that this helps to actually clean the bowl from the last thing I cooked.

I cover the top 'thingie majig' of the blades, too.  That's what I was taught at the demo.

Before I read this thread the other day i thought I would experiment and try something different with the cleaning process.

Even though my dearest and most smart partner said DO NOT put dishwashing liquid in the TM I thought " I know boats" and look ..... who's the demonstrator in this house anyway? Huh! Me ! Thats who!

I really should know better than to not listen to my partner...... she really is so very wise.

description of process:

  • fill TM bowl with warm water to just above centre point on blades
  • put in  ......  MORE than enough concentrated dish liquid
   :P

  • slowly turn speed from 1 all the way to 9 thinking .....  whats the problem .... theres no foam!
   :)
  • watch the water whizzing round and round at increadbly high spped through hole in top of cover
   8)

  • think to my manly self " what is my woman so paranoid about ??
   ???
  • suddenly turn speed dial from 9 to open lid position
   :P

  • in one swift and foul movement lift jug from base
  • watch bloody huge water / foam spout from central hole as water and foam suddenly react
    :o
    • spend 15 minutes cleaning up foam from walls, floors ....and ceiling with partner standing over me howling with laughter!
      >:(

MORAL:    Listen to woman .... she is smart!

Just think -two good things

!. You can tell all your customers that you have it on good authority that this is not a good method to clean the TMX

2. You did it in the privacy of your own home - so nobody will know.    ;) ;)

lol

if it's any consolation:
a) i always put detergent in mine when cleaning (albeit from a sink full, not a squeeze directly into it) and
b) i opened my lid too quickly the other day after making rice milk, i had gritty bits of rice sediments and puddles of rice milk all over the kitchen! REALLY hard to clean up :-))

I've just had a good giggle, must remember to share this with DH. He may then forget that we ended up with apple risotto all over the place yesterday. (It stays sticky on the floor no matter how many times you clean it)

ok I am going to fess up...I put detergent in my bowl...only I don't set it to whizz around  ;D ;D ;D ;D I just agitate the blades back and forth like you do to clean it and haven't had a huge mess (YET!!) now will approach with great trepidation :P :P :P I do put it on with heat to cook for a while just like Caroline suggests. I don't know if the heat stops the foam from developing so much ??? ???
